Forest Carbon Accounting Specialist

The Forest Carbon and Carbon Accounting Specialist will support Daemeter’s expanding portfolio of carbon, climate change mitigation and sustainable forestry projects. The role is responsible for delivering high-quality technical expertise in carbon accounting, forest monitoring, and natural resource management. The Specialist will contribute to analysis, project implementation, proposal development, and capacity building within the Forest Nature Climate Knowledge Area team.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver projects related to forest carbon, carbon accounting, and natural resource management, ensuring alignment with national and international standards.
- Support the design, planning, and implementation of carbon assessments and inventories, particularly within the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector.
- Ensure all carbon accounting outputs are robust, transparent, consistent, complete, and audit-ready for third-party validation and verification.
- Provide end-to-end technical support across the forest and peatland carbon project cycle, from early-stage scoping and feasibility through the preparation and technical review of PRA, PIN, PDD, and MR, ensuring robust application of recognised carbon standards and methodologies, effective responses to validation and verification findings, and alignment with national and international standards.
- Integrate carbon accounting and MRV with Indonesia’s forestry governance instruments (MUK, Perhutanan Sosial, RKU/RKT, and forest certification systems), while ensuring alignment of project design and MRV with the Carbon Economic Value (NEK) regulation and applicable carbon trading regulations.
- Prepare and review technical documents, including project proposals, reports, and presentations, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency across all deliverables.
- Conduct data analysis, manage QA/QC processes, and maintain thorough, well-documented records of project data and outputs.
- Support geospatial analysis for MRV, coordinating with GIS and KA teams to ensure consistent data standards, metadata, and QA/QC protocols; maintain structured and audit-ready project data and documentation; and support uncertainty, QA/QC, and conservativeness assessments, including Monte Carlo simulations where applicable.
- Coordinate with project managers, sub-consultants, and partners to ensure timely and successful delivery of project milestones.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory developments, and best practices in forestry, climate change, and carbon accounting, and integrate these insights into project work.
- Support knowledge management through training and capacity-building activities for internal teams and external partners, as required.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in forestry, Geography, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field from a reputable university is required.
A master’s degree in a relevant field is a strong advantage.
Professional Experience
- Minimum of five years’ experience in forestry, AFOLU-sector GHG accounting, and forest carbon accounting, preferably within an environmental, climate, or sustainability consultancy context.
- Demonstrated experience working with carbon standards and methodologies, such as Verra VCS/CCB, Gold Standard, Plan Vivo, ART-TREES, or equivalent, including application in project design, monitoring, validation, or verification, as well as familiarity with Indonesian forestry and carbon regulations, including SRN-PPI and relevant FOLU policies.
- Proven capability in natural resource valuation and environmental or economic analysis, including interpretation of costs, benefits, and trade-offs associated with forest management, climate mitigation actions, and nature-based solutions.
- Experience in working within and/or managing complex projects, working with cross-functional teams, and delivering high-quality outputs to clients.
- Prior involvement in proposal development, business development, and client engagement is advantageous.
- Technical experience in forest and/or peatland restoration including reforestation, assisted natural regeneration (ANR), peatland rewetting, canal blocking, enrichment planting, or ecological rehabilitation planning will be a strong advantage, particularly where restoration activities are linked to carbon accounting, MRV indicators, or monitoring of emission reductions and removals.
- Strong analytical abilities with meticulous attention to detail, supported by robust quantitative and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, able to handle multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills in both English and Bahasa Indonesia (oral and written), including technical and scientific writing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (including SharePoint) and statistical analysis software (R and/Python), with strong capabilities in GIS and remote sensing, including Google Earth Engine and Python-based geospatial workflows.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across institutional levels and diverse professional backgrounds.
- Willingness to travel to project sites, including remote locations, sometimes on short notice.
- Commitment to continuous learning, adaptability, and taking on new challenges beyond the usual scope of work.
- Skills in GIS will be advantageous
