Strengthening Social Safeguards in Palm Oil: Daemeter’s Independent Review of SEIA for PT. Brahma Binabakti

As part of its commitment to sustainable palm oil development, PT. Brahma Binabakti (PT BBB), Subsidiaries of PT Triputra Agro Persada (TAP) Group in Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province, undertook a Social and Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) in alignment with the RSPO and ISPO certification standards. This process aimed to guide the development of a robust social management plan and enhance the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs.
Daemeter Consulting was appointed as the independent reviewer of the SEIA process and its findings. Our role was to ensure that the assessment was conducted according to established standards, that stakeholder perspectives were adequately represented, and that proposed management responses aligned with the principles of responsible palm oil production.
Independent Review Insights
The SEIA covered four villages namely Suko Awin Jaya, Tanjung Lanjut, Bukit Baling, and Suak Putat with a combined population of over 17,000 people, largely consisting of migrant communities. The assessment identified both positive contributions and key challenges arising from the company’s presence.
Highlights from the SEIA:
- Positive Community Reception: The company is generally perceived as a contributor to local development through job creation, infrastructure improvements, and social investment programs.
- Persistent Issues: Land claims, dissatisfaction around hiring practices, and dust pollution from plantation roads were cited as ongoing concerns.
- Stakeholder Engagement: The assessment mapped out primary stakeholders, including community leaders, plasma cooperatives, farmers, contractors, and local government actors.
Recommendations and Social Risk Management
As reviewer, Daemeter verified that the SEIA proposed context-specific, actionable strategies, including:
- Enhancing communication channels between the company and local communities.
- Prioritizing local employment and developing inclusive economic empowerment initiatives.
- Addressing environmental nuisances like road dust through both short- and long-term mitigation measures.
- Strengthening grievance mechanisms and institutionalizing regular stakeholder consultations.
Upholding Social Integrity and Transparency
Our review confirms that the SEIA lays a strong foundation for social sustainability planning, ensuring PT BBB’s operations are not only environmentally compliant but also socially responsible and inclusive.
By independently reviewing this SEIA, Daemeter helps reinforce the integrity and credibility of impact assessments in the palm oil sector ensuring that companies operate with awareness, accountability, and respect for the communities and ecosystems in which they work.
